About

The Swedish School-Svenska Skolan is a Saturday morning language school. It started in 1971 Bethesda, Maryland and in 1991 it was incorporated into the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The following year, it was established as a non-profit organization under the IRS code, section 501(c) (3).

In September 2020 the Swedish School switched to virtual teaching on Zoom.

There are five different levels of instruction from beginners to the most advanced, taught by native Swedish instructors. The Swedish School is one of the largest Swedish language school for adults in the United States.

Our school year is divided into two semesters that run from the middle of September to the end of April. Each semester has twelve 2.5 hour sessions with a total of 30 hours of instruction. Six weeks of Summer School with communicative exercises is offered from May to June each year.

The school uses the most up-to-date textbooks and teaching materials available from Sweden, supplemented by newspaper articles, videos and DVDs. Our teaching priority and goal is that students can express themselves in Swedish. In addition, we stress writing using correct grammar.

Who are our students? Many of them have Swedish spouses and therefore have a special interest in learning the language, especially if their children attend The Swedish School for Children . Others have Swedish boy- or girlfriends, a Swedish heritage, college students or have developed contacts with Swedes over the Internet! Still, others are planning to pursue academic research, work or study in Sweden.

The Swedish School – Svenska Skolan is a non-profit organization under IRS code, section 501 (c) (3).

The school has a non-discriminatory policy and therefore does not discriminate against students on the basis of race, color, and national or ethnic origin.
