Swedish for Beginners

Level 101 Fall

Prerequisite: No previous knowledge is required

Goal : Basic dialogue about daily life

  • request and offer information

  • days of the week
  • telephone greetings
  • completing basic forms

Grammar: The alphabet, word order, main clause, questions and answers, personal pronouns, definite and indefinite articles of nouns in singular and plural, interrogative adverbs, negation, present tense of verbs, auxiliary verbs, prepositions

The course stresses correct pronunciation by frequent repetition and it teaches vocabulary and grammatical structures using culturally authentic texts.  Present tense is used in affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences.  The course focuses on developing your conversational skills through reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary exercises.

Group work, oral interaction and listening comprehension.  Written grammar exercises.

The instructor makes a point of encouraging communication in Swedish.

Swedish for Advanced Beginners

Level 201 Fall

Prerequisite: For students with a basic knowledge of Swedish and for those who have completed two semesters (60 hrs) of Swedish or equivalent.

Goal: Manage easy everyday situations such as talking about your job, family and interests etc.

Grammar: indirect speech, demonstrative and reflexive pronouns, imperative form of verbs, adverb/time, pronouns as subject and object, word order with time expressions.

The course increases vocabulary through dialogues and role play between students using everyday language in both present and past tenses.  It further develops basic reading, writing and correct pronunciation by frequent repetition using culturally authentic texts.  The course focuses on developing your conversational skills without losing attention to reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary acquisition.

Group work, role play, oral interaction and listening comprehension. Written grammar exercises.

Intermediate Swedish

Level 301 Fall

Prerequisite: A third year course for students who have completed 2 years of Swedish (120 hrs) or equivalent.

Goal: Learn how to express various opinions in simple discussions.

The students will consolidate and further their knowledge of Swedish already required while developing vocabulary by reading a detective story and writing and listening to spoken Swedish.  This course requires some ability to speak, read and write independently while participating in discussions and recounting short stories.

The textbook has 46 short, funny, and informative sections about life in Sweden.  The content of each story gives the reader an insight into different aspects of Swedish society, and some of its typical traditions.  The student will find general answers to  many questions about life in Sweden.  Each section will provide the reader with interesting material for further discussion.

Group work, oral presentations and interactions, role play and listening comprehension. Written grammar exercises.

The instructor encourages communication in Swedish.

Advanced Intermediate Swedish

Level 401 Fall

Prerequisite: Designed for students who have completed three years (180 hrs) of Swedish or equivalent.

Goal: Increase the proficiency level while expanding vocabulary and reviewing the grammar.

Requires stronger knowledge of Swedish and the ability to read and write more fluently.  The student will continue to build vocabulary and grammar skills and further develop a comprehension of the language through individual presentations and discussions about everyday life, current events, and special interest etc.

Each chapter in the textbook has a factual section, combined with a fairy tale.  Many of the texts touch on the relations of Swedes with other countries and cultures throughout centuries.  There are also stories and fairy tales from countries outside Sweden.  The variation of texts will provide the student with interesting discussion material and many useful grammar exercises.

Each text is followed by exercises in reading comprehension and grammar as well as oral/written exercises.

A course conducted only in Swedish.

Advanced Swedish

Level 501 Fall

Prerequisite: A solid background in Swedish

Goal: Further your knowledge in Swedish to be able to express ideas and opinions more accurately.

This course helps the student develop language skills by expanding the vocabulary and reviewing the grammar while expressing opinions.  The student will enjoy the extensive emphasis on the spoken and written language

The textbook consists of interesting, authentic material from newspapers and magazines.  The texts cover areas of language, history, culture, society, relationships and environment.  Each text contains exercises to test skills in search, overview and close reading.  The variation of topics introduces many interesting discussion opportunities as well as useful grammar exercises.  The student will also deepen the listening comprehension skills by watching and listening to Swedish news on the Internet.

Teaching is done entirely in Swedish.
