Swedish for Beginners

Level 101 Fall

An introductory Swedish course. It provides the basis for students to learn simple dialogues such as introductions, family, cardinal numbers, telling time, weather conditions and courtesy expressions using present tense in affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences. The course stresses correct pronunciation by frequent repetition and it teaches basic reading and writing. Group work, oral, written grammar exercises and some cultural aspects are also covered.

Swedish for Advanced Beginners

Level 201 Fall

For students with a basic knowledge of Swedish and for those who have completed two semesters of Swedish or equivalent. The course increases vocabulary through dialogues and role play between students using basic everyday language in present and past tense. It provides the ability to express emotions, make appointments, use ordinal numbers and courtesy expression, make suggestions and give compliments. The course further develops basic reading, writing and correct pronunciation by frequent repetition. Oral as well as written exercises. Some cultural aspects are covered.

Intermediate Swedish

Level 301 Fall

A third year course for students who have completed 2 years of Swedish or equivalent. There will be emphasis on basic skills review. Requires some ability to speak, read and write independently while participating in dialogues. The student will further develop vocabulary by reading, writing and listening to spoken Swedish and CD’s. Grammar exercises. Covers some cultural aspects.

Advanced Intermediate Swedish

Level 401 Fall

Designed for students who have completed three years of Swedish or equivalent. Requires stronger knowledge of Swedish and the ability to read and write more fluently. The textbook introduces factual texts and essays about Swedish history, culture and society. Develops conversational skills through discussions, oral as well as written presentations and grammar exercises.

Advanced Swedish

Level 501 Fall

Students with a solid background in Swedish will enjoy the extensive emphasis on the spoken and written language. It further expands vocabulary and develops language skills. The novel “Stenhuggaren” is an exciting and entertaining mystery novel with a psychological touch. Listening comprehension by watching Swedish news programs on the Internet/TV. Grammar exercises and oral presentations.

Swedish for Beginners

Level 102 Spring

A continuation of the introductory course in Swedish for students who have completed Swedish 101 in the fall or equivalent.  The course continues to teach basic everyday vocabulary, based on the fall semester, with simple dialogues regarding shopping for food and clothes, colors, leisure time activities, telephone conversation and different professions.  Present tense is used in affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences.  The course stresses correct pronunciation by frequent repetition and it teaches basic reading and writing.  Group work, oral, written grammar exercises and some cultural aspects are also covered
